Statement Of Intent-updated

Rationale

the work which i have produced and enjoy working in, has a combination of different styles. i like to work with a combination of type an image within my work. i want to produce work which explores a range of ways type and image can work together. this could be a combination in a illustrative format, 'type as image'. this is an area which i feel more comfortable in, as i have more control over my work when i can use a hand crafted approach, which can later be finalized in a digital format.

I would like to continue working with limitations of colour within my work, rather than always working with vibrant colours. I will work with colours which are appropriate for the briefs which I am creating work for. This will help me create bold design work which has strong impact.

I have began to create more design based work rather than just predominantly hand crafted design, I will continue to experiment with how typography works with a range of imagery in terms of layout.

I have developed an interest into how typography and layout can be used to create bold compositions from just using letterforms and different weights of the same typeface. I will continue to include more considered typography within my work.

I will continue to develop my understanding of the print process and effective design, by using appropriate stocks and print process’s and apply my designs to a range of different products which are necessary for the briefs I produce.

I will use subtlety and detail with in the design work, which I produce.

I will create work for a range of different specialist and specialised promotions

Subjects/Themes

I will like to cover a range of themes for the fmp module.

I will use a limited edition, collectable themes, which will allow to create work which is authentic. I will also use narrative within my design work which will help create meaning and allow my work to appeal to a wider audience.

For most of the projects I will undertake I will produce designs which works as a set or a collection, this will allow me to apply my work to a range of different products

Design Disciplines / Creative Development

For my FMP, I will be covering a range of area within design. I would like to keep developing a more in-depth understanding with illustration, and continue developing a style. I will also like to cover a range of ways I can use type. This may be a combination of type and image in an illustration format, however only when it is appropriate. I will also be applying my work to areas of design such as packaging and editorial. I will experiment with creative ways I can use layout on my designs to work in conjunction with the separate image and type work which I produce.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when?

I would Like to develop an more informed understanding about sending more complex jobs to print . in terms of process and paper stocks, I will gain this knowledge by contacting printers, and trail and error through sending self promotion jobs to high end professional printers.

I will also like to develop more effective ways of producing print, such as hand crafting templates which can be used for the letterpress print process.

I will also like to learn book binding in more depth, I will therefore use reading week as a time to find out more in this are of production, by using the facilities at the Vernon street building. And also contacting designers who use this style of production.

Brief 1: Playing Cards Project

Rationale:

I have decided to produce this brief as it will allow to create an illustrative style which will be based on a narrative theme which contains plenty of visual language possibilities. This will then allow me to completely personalise the project. In terms of producing typefaces and an overall product which will authenticate the cards which i produce. This allow me to create a personal project to bring across my preferred style as a designer.

Brief 2: Paul Smith

Rationale:

this will also be a considerable brief which will allow me to create designs for a range of different products and specialist promotions, it will allow me to create a more professional style which will be considered when applied to appropriate products. I will also be able to concentrate on a very high-end style of promotion, as it will be promoting a new high class clothing range and opening event. This will allow me free range on printing costs and finishes, which will need to be considered and tested to bring across the overall high end feel of the product I will be promoting.

Brief 3: 3D MANUAL (icons)

Rationale:

I have decided to do this brief as it is potentially a successful project which will be going to print, my job is to produce designs for the icons which will be used within the manual, thiswill allow me to produce clarity through the use of image. Which will need to take audience into consideration.

Brief 4: Year book collaboration.

Rationale:

This will be a good opportunity to work with a range of designers with different disciplines and with the same motivation, it will be a good opportunity to learn and share ideas with a group of talented students.

Contextual references / Designers / Studios / Companies (specific)

I have looked a wide range of illustrators for previous modules, however I have developed more of an interest, into type and layout. For my FMP I will look at contemporary illustrators, to develop a more informed style which is both personal and unique to other styles been used. I will also continue to look at a wide range of typography and layout based designers who produce work from editorial to creating typefaces.
